Mullets, PJs and Fur for Marc Jacobs


The fashion God that he is, Marc Jacobs has done it again.  Despite the delivery issues that postponed his show from Monday of NYFW to Valentine’s Day, the highly anticipated collection made everyone’s heart flutter, including mine.  Only Marc can cover models in mullets and send them down the runway topless, all the while looking sexy, sleek and classy of course.

The giant suspended sun brought out the textures of the mohair sweaters, fox fur coats, and the flashy sequin ensembles.  I am not a big fan of purple yet I want that flouncy purple sequined jumper hanging in my closet, just another example of the power of Jacobs influence.  It isn’t a case of want, it is actually a necessity.

I am a lover of the pajama trend that’s happening right now.  This ensemble is one my favorites.  Beige silk button down shirt and short shorts to go from the bed to the streets.  Perfect!

Nonetheless the collection left me breathless, as it always does.  Marc Jacobs managed to produce a collection that can not only bring out the sexy inner-goddess of a woman, but also accentuate her feminine characteristics.  I am looking forward to see what he has got in store for Louis Vuiton!

Oscar Worthy Looks Straight Off the Runway

Dear Leading Ladies of Hollywood, we have found your Oscar gowns and we expect you to wear them! With the Oscars right around the corner and New York Fashion Week in full swing, we can’t help but wonder what Hollywood’s elite will be wearing at this year’s award show. So we stopped wondering for a second or two and have compiled  a list of Oscar worthy looks straight off the runways of New York City. From bold and beautiful to just simply elegant, going wrong in one these gowns is highly impossible.

NYFW: Monique Lhuillier FW13

The best fashion shows are the ones that make you forget about all the madness of NYFW like tweeting every look or being the first one out of your seat to avoid traffic. It’s mesmerizing when a designer’s months of hard work and long hours are translated through the garments, creating a unified feeling of appreciation and awe. Monique Lhuillier did just that last night at the Lincoln Center theatre for her Fall/Winter 2013 show.

Famous for her extravagant, celebrity-driven red carpet gowns, Monique Lhuillier dramatized her sophisticated feminine aesthetic. It was a bold, opulent collection full of rich jewel tones, abstract prints and intricate detailing.

She opened the show with heavy snow-white knits and separates before hitting it hard with saturated color. The runway backdrop was mimicked by a green malachite rock, which she said was the color inspiration of the entire collection. This green was consistently shown throughout the show along with other deep shades of oxblood, amethyst and a timeless black.

Details varied from lace sleeves and cutouts to flouncy ostrich feathers and sparkling beads. Every piece was embellished with something ornate giving eveningwear new lengths. Abstract embroidery prevailed while any thought of simplicity was absent.

She gave femininity a new edge by including a lace cigarette pant under a matching high-low dress and placing bold jeweled collars on peplums and romantic fabrics like silk and tulle. While beautifully adorned gowns swept the runway, Lhuillier varied hemlines by including above-the-knee cocktail length and a new cut, just above the ankle.

Monique Lhuillier’s hard work surely paid off as she received a standing ovation by many audience members. Her anything but ordinary pieces will soon be all over the red carpet like always. But until then, it’s back to work for the designer for next season’s collection because great things take time and last night’s show is going to be hard to top.

NY Fashion Week Trend Takeaway Part 1: Oh Oxblood

Today marks the second official day of New York’s Fall 2013 Season of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and we were pretty excited to catch up on the collections that kicked off the shows.  There are always trends that dominate the runways and we definitely keep a keen eye out to ensure we’re on top of it all but this little craze couldn’t be missed if we tried…especially since this is now it’s second season dominating the catwalk – oh, Oxblood, how we love you so.  The deep red hue basically took over the magazine pages just a few months ago, we couldn’t get away from shades of wine, burgundy, maroon and the like – bags, shoes, jewels, furs, leathers – everywhere we turned.  Well it appears this baby is still going strong and although the name makes us cringe (Lucky Magazine really nailed it with their “19 Euphemisms for Oxblood“), we have to admit, we’re pretty into you.  Especially with BCBG’s laser-cut leather and Yigal’s head-to-toe cape.  The unanimous vote on NYFW Trend Takeaway Part 1: Oxblood has our hearts beating harder for sure.

NYFW: Angel Sanchez SS13

Geometric shapes, pops of color and structured leather and organza gowns were all over the stage at The Box at Lincoln Center for the Angel Sanchez SS13 presentation yesterday. With a vivid white backdrop, magenta cubic center art and cool serene music blasting, it was a chic, modern experience to say the least.  At first glance, the pieces were stark and sleek, but with a closer look there was this intricate beaded detailing adding delicacy and femininity to the designs. The colors remained rich in yellow, navy, black, white and magenta.  The models portrayed natural makeup, nude nails and slicked-back hair, emphasizing the shaded perfectly-structured fabrics and modernistic cutouts. Sculpture designer, Rafael Barrios created a geometric brooch specifically for Sanchez’s pieces that was consistently shown throughout the presentation complementing the fabulous dresses as a new kind of bold accessory.

NYFW Fall 2012 Trend Talk Part 3: Menswear Returns in Female Form

Androgynous pieces have always played a large role in the business of fashion, the ability to create something that can be worn by man or woman is priceless for so many reasons, yet this season designers are taking this idea to an entirely new level, tailoring true to form menswear to fit a woman’s body without compromising any of the details that make them classic.  Three piece suits, single-breasted jackets, collared shirts, ascots and even pocket squares in plaids, blues, greens and greys are accessorized by sleek stilettos, stockings and waist-cinching belts.  As we see the power shifting towards females in so many roles, it only seems apropos that the suit should fit the woman as strikingly as it does the man.  And yet somehow, even as the overall theme seems so simple and standard, the runways are exceptionally chic once again.  We hope this one sticks for a while.  The fedoras especially.
