Designers Sketch the Perfect Maternity Dress for Kate Middleton

Sure, it would be more fun to outfit the real live Duchess, but sometimes a pen and paper will just have to suffice, and today WWD asked a bevy of designers to come up with dresses fit for the last few months of Kate Middleton’s pregnancy. As you might expect, some options look more realistic than others.

Donna Karan designed a draped gown in striking blue that we could picture Kate wearing to a formal engagement, captioning the illustration: “Kate Middleton is elegant, sensual, timeless. This is a dress she could wear forever, at any age, at any stage, during and after her pregnancy.”

Karl Lagerfeld also went with blue, albeit in a rather different silhouette. For the pregnant royal, he sketched a bright navy Chanel frock with a mullet hem, high neck, and plunging neckline, adding the caption, “I think this dress is very much in her taste,” and scrawling “proud to be pregnant” at the top of the page. This isn’t exactly the first time he’s gotten fanciful with Kate’s wardrobe — recall the time he suggested she accessorize her “modern Victorian” wedding gown with a pair of thigh high boots? Something tells us he has fun with these little projects. - Styleite

Trend Forecasting

Forecasting: Fall 2013 Color Trends

Screen shot 2013-02-26 at 1.56.55 PM

This season, designers express the many moods of fall with skillfully arranged collections that will enhance and enliven customers’ outlooks as the colder months set in. Similarly, colors come together to create moods that range from sophisticated and structured to lively and vivid, encapsulating our inherent need for wardrobe variety to reflect emotions that run from thoughtfully introspective to irrepressibly elated.

“Just as the leaves change in autumn, the consumer will enjoy the ability to change their ‘look’ and try a new approach to their wardrobe for brisk days ahead,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “The fall 2013 palette allows for that versatility and experimentation.”

With the changing season, the greens from spring evolve and develop. Multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate, bringing luxury and elegance to the palette, while yellow-toned Linden Green brings a lightness and brightness to the deeper shades of fall. Try pairing both with Mykonos Blue, a bold, meditative blue, for a classic and relaxed fall look.

Exotic Acai adds mystery and richness to the palette, and can be incorporated with the other colors to create a number of powerful fall combinations. Pair the elegant shade of purple with Emerald for a regal disposition, or spirited Samba red for an expressive and dramatic look. Koi, a decorative orange with dazzling and shimmering qualities, is a statement color that serves as a pick-me-up for your wardrobe. Vivacious, an unruly and wildly deep fuchsia, adds an ebullient sensuality to the palette.

Pair Vivacious with anchoring Deep Lichen Green, a naturally lush shade of green, for a dynamic juxtaposition that captures both ends of the seasonal spectrum. Rounding out this season’s cornerstone colors, Turbulence, a dark mercurial gray, and Carafe, a rich, glamorous brown, provide more interesting and sophisticated alternatives to the black basics usually worn in colder months. Both staple neutrals pair gracefully with more expressive colors within the palette, such as Samba, Koi and Vivacious. - Pantone Color Institute®

NYFW: Monique Lhuillier FW13

ImageImageImageImage

The best fashion shows are the ones that make you forget about all the madness of NYFW like tweeting every look or being the first one out of your seat to avoid traffic. It’s mesmerizing when a designer’s months of hard work and long hours are translated through the garments, creating a unified feeling of appreciation and awe. Monique Lhuillier did just that last night at the Lincoln Center theatre for her Fall/Winter 2013 show.

Famous for her extravagant, celebrity-driven red carpet gowns, Monique Lhuillier dramatized her sophisticated feminine aesthetic. It was a bold, opulent collection full of rich jewel tones, abstract prints and intricate detailing.

She opened the show with heavy snow-white knits and separates before hitting it hard with saturated color. The runway backdrop was mimicked by a green malachite rock, which she said was the color inspiration of the entire collection. This green was consistently shown throughout the show along with other deep shades of oxblood, amethyst and a timeless black.

Details varied from lace sleeves and cutouts to flouncy ostrich feathers and sparkling beads. Every piece was embellished with something ornate giving eveningwear new lengths. Abstract embroidery prevailed while any thought of simplicity was absent.

She gave femininity a new edge by including a lace cigarette pant under a matching high-low dress and placing bold jeweled collars on peplums and romantic fabrics like silk and tulle. While beautifully adorned gowns swept the runway, Lhuillier varied hemlines by including above-the-knee cocktail length and a new cut, just above the ankle.

Monique Lhuillier’s hard work surely paid off as she received a standing ovation by many audience members. Her anything but ordinary pieces will soon be all over the red carpet like always. But until then, it’s back to work for the designer for next season’s collection because great things take time and last night’s show is going to be hard to top.
